Hi Guys
Sorry not been in here for a while, currently working on a custom CMS using this layout extension and I have a few issues I would like to raise.

1) The layout tool is simple to use but it does make a hell of a lot of cascading divs! And as I result a lot of linked css files. This is a point I raised a while back as IE has a limit of 32 that can be linked in one page then after that they are ignored. 32 sounds like a lot but using your extension it can rack up a hell of a lot without careful use which then can go on to show false errors when some of the CSS is not rendered . Maybe appending additional data to an existing css file? This could be a way around the problem. You could always add a coded comment so the extension know which section is linked to which div ie.
/* START.CMS_Core_wrapper_layout */
.CMS_Core_wrapper_layout{ width:960px;}
/* END.CMS_Core_wrapper_layout */

2) The background gradient colour only adds two background image lines that does not support IE when adding
"filter: progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.gradient(startColorstr='#cccccc', endColorstr='#000000');" would . I hate using IE it is a dreadful browser but sadly a lot of my clients do use it and so do their customers so it would be ideal if you could add it please.

3) Allow the border between the design area and the tools to be movable so the content window can be expanded horizontally. At the moment it only had a toggle collapse button to a none or a pre-set size which makes looking at the code content quite difficult when a lot of code is involved.
Anyway keep up the good work and looking forward to your new releases

Hello,

Sorry for the no reply to your post. I don't know how it got away as we actually discussed some your points in one of our meetings for the next Layouts release.

I will try to take each of your points and add explanations and future plans.

1. Yes, you are correct 32 is a pretty big number. The amount of CSS links added is very high because we also add an additional CSS file for user to add it's own CSS code inside. This would allow a user to save custom CSS in a template that can then be used in future pages.

In the next version we plan on improving the templating system a lot and we will look to avoid using many CSS files. Better parsing of the CSS file will do the job.

2. The background gradient feature was more an experimental feature with CSS 3. The plan is to have full support for CSS 3 and HTML 5 in the next release. Additionally, where possible, we'll ensure compatibility for all major browsers.

3. We are redesigning the entire layout creating interface for the next version. Content editing space won't be a problem anymore in the new interface.

These are some insights on what we have been working on for the next release.

If you are interested to find out more about the new release I can sign you up for the beta testing group for the project.

Also, thank you for sharing the problems you found and if you have any other ideas or possible problems in mind we'll be more than happy to check them out.

Kind regards,
Andrei Rinciog

Hi Andrei

Nice to hear from you, sure sign me up to the beta program I would be happy to give feedback and do any testing if it helps.

On a separate note do you think that in light of Adobes move to stop mobile flash development and with the beta release of Edge that any future extension development by yourselves will not be flash based?

I for one do not use extensions that have flash output as to many of my clients want there sites to be viewable on iphone and ipads not to mention the high CPU usage on certain flash files that can affect netbook, mobile and tablet performance.

Hi again,

Glad to hear that you are willing to participate in our beta program. Looking forward to your feedback.

Well, in my personal opinion, I think it's somewhat natural that people tend to not use Flash so much in their websites as a result of the many devices out there. A while back everybody wanted flashy animation on their website, now everybody wants their website to be visible everywhere. It's like the internet is maturing in a way.

This has impacted our work as well. We changed our focus more on jQuery or pure CSS output. I can't say for sure if and when we will make a new extension based on Flash. Not on short term that's for sure.

I don't see that happening in the near future. As you said, clients want sites viewable anywhere. So usage for Flash based extensions has and probably will continue to drop.

I didn't knew that the preview for Edge was available on Adobe Labs. Thank you for the news.

Regards,
Andrei
