IE8 renders text links and a spacer on Windows 7. Perfect in FF and Chrome. Also seems to work in XP with IE8. Puzzled...

I have further information for my problem. IE reports errors on the bottom left of the browser with a yellow caution triangle. When I double click it it gave me this:

Hello David,
You probably don't have Flash Player installed on IE 8. We had the same problem reported last week and this was the cause.
We will look into our code and see why the extension gives an error in this situation. I've helped the other client that reported this to implement a Flash Player check script on its page. Do you want me to send you the script and instructions to insert it in the page by email ?
