Creating Charts > Single Series Chart

In this section we will show you how to create a single series column chart to compare a company's sales for 2007 with sales for the year 2008. The Following data table will be used for creating the chart.

Quarter 2007
Quarter 1 $1,000,000
Quarter 2 $1,010,000
Quarter 3 $1,500,000
Quarter 4 $1,300,000

Before you proceed to create your first single series chart, we suggest that you go through the 'Your First Chart' module as some of the techniques that are needed for creating a multi-series chart have been described in detail in it,

Following are the steps for creating a single series column chart;

  1. In the 'Data Grid' screen - create a table with 2 columns and 4 rows. Next, fill the data into the table by referring to the data table (above).
  2. Now we need to categorize the data into 'Categories' and 'Series'. Select column 'A' and designate it as a category by clicking on the 'Add as category' button. Next, designate column 'B' as series using the 'Add as series' button.
  3. In the lower portion of the 'Data Grid' screen - name column 'B' as '2007' and Select a color for the series - using the color picker or by entering a hex code in the provided text field. YOur 'Data Grid' screen should now look as under.

  4. Switch to the 'Chart Selection' tab and select the 'Column' chart option from the single-series chart category.
  5. Open the 'Titles & Axis Names' Panel, and enter the 'xAxiaName' and 'yAxisname' in the respective fields, for this chart we will set the x-axis name as 'Quarter' and the y-axis name as 'Sales'.
  6. Switch to the 'General Options' screen - and name the chart 'myfirst_ss_chart' and set the width and height to 400 pixels and 300 pixels respectively.
  7. In the 'Caption, Subcaption' panel - set the Caption as 'Sales' and Sub Caption as 'For year 2007'.
  8. Check the 'Show Advanced Options' check box which is located in the upper portion of the 'General Options' screen. Now, go to the 'Number Formatting and Scaling' panel and enter '$' into the 'numberPrefix' field.
  9. Use the 'Open Preview' button to preview the chart and then click the 'OK' button to embed the chart into your web page.
You are now ready to open your page in a browser and see your single 1300series chart in action.
