How to create a chain effect (timeline)

In this tutorial I'm going to show you how to create a chain effect using the timeline, a very nice and helpful procedure, especially when you have a lot of effects and of movie clips.

1. In the beginning I would like to mention that you should have the Creative Movie FX extension installed on your computer. If you have any problems installing it, read the "How to install an extension" tutorial.

2. Prepare the stage (set the rate to 35 fps) and insert a new layer. We're going to use two layers so that we get rid of the wait parameter (this can become very annoying when we have many movie clips and many effects applied on them).

3. On the first frame of „Layer 1” insert a movie clip and apply an effect on it. For simplicity, please convert the movie and effect to ANOTHER movie... Let's check out the properties of the effect in the next screen-shot.

4. Extend the timeline till frame 71 (at least) and there insert a blank keyframe on Layer 2. Insert an identical movie clip as in step 3 and apply a new instance of Creative MovieFX which you'll convert again to another movie clip. Set the properties of the effect as in the following screenshot.

As you observed, I didn't need a wait factor anymore, which is a very good detail. Imagine if you would have 25 movie clips with 50 effects applied on them; to remember all the wait factors for them sounds pretty crazy, right? So, the conclusion is to try and use the timeline method more often than behaviors.

5. The last step is to extend the timeline on Layer 2 with at least 70 frames (the duration of the reversed effects).

6. Preview your movie... You should obtain the Yo-Yo effect, but you could replace the square with a circle and this would make it a pure chain effect on two different movie clips.
