How to use with XML

In this tutorial we're going to configure our menu directly from an XML file; this would be really helpful because, in case of changes, we don't need to enter and modify the Flash file, but only add/delete/edit a few rows in an XML file (which actually is a simple text file). In order to be able to do this tutorial, the first thing you have to do is install Creative FL Vertical Menu extension on your computer; if you encounter any problems doing that, check out the "How to install an extension" tutorial.

1. Open Flash and create a new file. (For CS3 users: in order to set-up the frame rate and name your file, right-click the stage and select "Document properties")

2. Open the Components panel and drag an instance of Creative Vertical Menu on the stage. Place it at (10,10) coordinates.

3. Open the Component Inspector panel and the General tab of the menu's properties.

4. Now you need an XML file. It's very easy to create, you just need to write the following text in a text editor (I chose Notepad) and than click File>Save As and write „menu.xml”, for instance; you can use any name you like as long as it's followed by „xml”. Another pretty important detail is to include the „.xml” document in the same document where the „.swf” file is.

If you have anything left unclear about this, refer to the product's complete manual, Creative FL Vertical Menu > Working with Vertical Menus > The General Tab > How to Create a Menu Structure using XML .

5. As we called our file „menu.xml” (and it's in the same folder with the .fla file!), let's insert in the corresponding text field the path to them:

6. Let's preview the file. With the menu structure we defined, we should get something like this:
